All-Ateneo and Xavier University Theology Teachers gathered at AdNU for a Conference

A conference entitled “Strengthening the Formative Role of the Theology Department in Jesuit Universities” was held at Ateneo de Naga University’s Richard Michael Fernando, S.J. Conference Hall last October 28-30, 2008. The event was hosted by the Theology Department of AdNU for all the faculty members of All-Ateneo and Xavier University. The participating universities that attended were Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Manila University, Xavier University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, and Ateneo de Naga University.

The president of the hosting university, Fr. Joel Tabora, gave the welcoming address to formally open the conference. It was then followed by three speakers namely, Fr. Tony F. Moreno, SJ who discussed the Rationale of the Conference: Its Beginnings, Goals and Objectives”; Fr. Jose Mario Francisco, SJ who tackled briefly the Reproductive Health Bill and the renewal of Catholic and Jesuit Identity amongst Jesuit Academic Institutions; and Fr. Richie Genilo who gave a comprehensive discussion of the Reproductive Health Bill and the Catholic Faith: The Lagman Bill.

The last activity of the conference consisted of a dialogue between Theology Teachers discussing theology courses offered with their respective universities. They did an in depth review of the contents of the said curriculum along with their references and teaching approach.

An Interpretative Night at Arrupe

Last October 29, 2008, Ateneo de Naga’s Teatro Dignos and University choir along with 13 out-of-school youth from pilot barangays of the University’s four municipalities gave a histrionic presentation at the Arrupe Convention Hall capping off the packaging workshop portion of the Youth Speak Project. Participating youths presented interpretative song and dance numbers in the program.

The Dean of Commerce, staff from the Livelihood and Entrepreneurship Cluster, Social Involvement Offices, University President, University Library Staff, and Ateneo students came to enjoy the program. The presentation were also attended by Calabanga Mayor Evelyn Yu and Buhi Mayor Rey Lacoste, Sangay Vice-Mayor and Cabusao Vice-Mayor Nebb Santiago, along with some of their members.

Dr. Rose Baceleres, the Dean of Mass Communications from Silliman University praised the performance along with the messages they successfully conveyed that resulted from their training spree conducted last July and October . She added that there are a lot of potential to be harnessed from community-based talents and if directed properly, can bring empowerment amongst the youth.
